Biography

Professor LaRochelle holds a Canada Research Chair in Advanced Photonic Technologies for Communications. She is a professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Université Laval, and director of the Center for Optics, Photonics and Lasers (COPL). She is Fellow of the OSA and IEEE.

Professor LaRochelle is an expert in photonic science and technologies. She has received a Ph.D. degree in optics from the College of Optical Sciences, University of Arizona. She worked for four years on the development of electro-optic systems for the Department of National Defence before joining the Optical communications laboratory at Université Laval. Her current research is focused on active and passive components for optical communication systems including optical fibers for space division multiplexing, multicore and multimode erbium-doped fiber amplifiers, as well as silicon photonic filters and modulators. Over the years, she has made contributions to the field of fiber lasers, all-optical signal processing, analog optical transmissions, and code division multiple access with frequency encoding.

Prof. LaRochelle has directed the work of more than 70 graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. With her team, she has co-authored more than 150 journal papers (90% IEEE/OSA) and more than 250 papers published in international conference proceedings. Professor LaRochelle is currently serving the Board of Directors of the Optical Society of America and of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada.
